193776 - Spectral Proper Orthogonal Decomposition Analysis of Low Reynolds Number Wing-Gust Interactions
Abstract:
Spectral Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (SPOD) decomposes data in time and space by identifying energy-ranked modes that each oscillate at a single frequency. Despite its widespread use in turbulent flow analysis, SPOD has not been extensively applied to highly unsteady, low-Reynolds-number flows, such as the wing-gust interaction studied in this work. Here, an airfoil is subjected to a long duration transverse gust, where the trailing edge oscillates as an attempt to mitigate the gust effect on the wing. SPOD was performed in the wake region, in which frequency reconstruction and mode reconstruction are compared and judged by the ARMI (Average Relevance Magnitude Index) metric. Specifically, data was reconstructed using increasing numbers of SPOD modes and frequencies. For successive reconstructions, ARMI demonstrates how each region is far from or close to the true data for both methods. Finally, the reconstruction errors help to conclude that, in space, the SPOD window chosen was enough to characterize the flow. However, because the trailing edge oscillation could only partially mitigate the gust effect on the wing, the wake structures exhibit strong aperiodicity in time, which leads to inefficient flow field reconstruction with SPOD modes ranked by frequencies. In the current study, all frequencies need to be included to reconstruct the highly aperiodic flow.
