184898 - Street Level Flood Model and Visualization
Abstract:
The research is to model the storm surge flood in a local scale, and to reveal impacts of the flood to builidng and structures. This so-called street-level flood modeling can help assisting flood management team to accurately anallyze flood risks to local communities. 3-D realization of flooding events are critical to property owners to identify actual risks from the flood. The modeling domian is Contraband Bayou and surrounding areas. The areas cover a populated area in the city of Lake Charles. The area was flooded in the recent floods in 2020 and 2021. In this study, the hydraulic modeling software Hec-Ras was used as the major modeling tool. USGS and NOAA data were used in the study. USGS topographic data was used to define the domian. NOAA water surface eleveation data in the Contraband Bayou were used as transient boundary conditions for the simulation. In the study, grid-independent study was conducted to make sure grid resolution for the simulations is appropriate. Validation of transient water surface elevation of flow speed were also conducted to ensure the results are accurate. The study is the first step towards developing a digital twin of the part of Contraband Bayou which will be a tool for future flood management endeavers.
