86944 - An Experimental Investigation of Deformable Bubbles in Intense Turbulence
Although many works focused on spherical bubbles before, finite-sized bubbles undergo complicated deformation driven by the surrounding turbulence in many applications. To investigate the question how deformable bubbles behave in intense turbulence, we will present an experimental study that focus on bubble-turbulence interaction in a turbulent vertical water tank, with very intense turbulence driven by over 400 jets. We utilize 4 high speed cameras to capture fluid flows, bubble shape, and bubble dynamics simultaneously. We will show bubbles rising under the influence of strong turbulence and characterize the bubble deformation through the 3D shape reconstruction. The results will pave the foundation for understanding turbulent bubbly flow where pre-existing background turbulence is intense.
