65684 - Application of OpenFOAM in Numerical Simulations of High-Speed Trains Aerodynamics
The present study uses openFOAM package to numerically simulate and investigate the aerodynamic performance and characteristics of high-speed train (velocity beyond 250km/h) under typical and critical conditions including flow passing a single train, a single train running at a given velocity in the open air, a single train passing through tunnel, two trains meeting towards each other at the same velocity in the open air. In terms of different operation conditions, separate openFOAM solvers are adopted. For flow passing a single train, transient and steady solvers for incompressible, vicious, and turbulent flow are adopted respectively on a fixed mesh and the results are compared with commercial software. For a single train running at a constant velocity, passing through tunnel and two trains meeting towards each other, a transient solver for incompressible, viscous and turbulent flow is employed on a moving mesh. Apart from the circumstance of flow passing a fixed high-speed train, overset mesh is used in which inverse distance interpolation is taken to couple background and inner overset mesh. The built-in mesh generation tools SnappyHexMesh are utilized to generate background and inner overset mesh. In all simulations, k-epsilon two equations RANS model is used to simulate the turbulent flow and all simulations are run in parallel.
